Where do you think the stormwater goes that you see running across your yard then down the street? We have found that often times people misunderstand the path of the stormwater and believe it gets cleaned before being discharged into our rivers. But the reality is that the stormwater drains lead directly to our waterways. So whatever is on our grass, streets, parking lots, and sidewalks is picked up by the stormwater rushing over it and carried down the storm drain landing straight in the river.
The James River Basin Partnership and the City of Springfield Stormwater Services joined forces to try to clear up this common misconception. This effort, patterned off the successful 'Rain Barrel Reveal' is entitled Storm Drain Reveal.
Ten local artists were chosen to paint murals on ten downtown storm drains. Each piece of art was required to reflect the path of the stormwater. Sketches were submitted, art chosen, and the work began.
Photographs of the storm drains will be displayed at the Canvas Art Gallery 315 South Avenue during First Friday Artwalk May 6th then again during Artsfest May 7th & 8th. During those two events come place your vote for a "People's Choice" award!
During the remainder of the month of May you can find them hanging at Mudhouse Coffee at 323 South Avenue.
All the storm drains that were chosen for Storm Drain Reveal lead to Jordan Creek. Jordan Creek is a tributary of Wilson's Creek which drains into the James River eventually ending up in Table Rock Lake.
There are many things you can do to help keep our stormwater and as a result, our rivers and lakes cleaner. You can collect your rainwater, build a rain garden, get your soil tested and a 4-year nutrient management plan written, pick-up pet waste, keep lawn clippings out of the street, and make sure your vehicle is in good working order to name a few. So spread the word; The stormwater heading down the storm drains lead straight to our rivers!
